What is a wireless thermometer? Not all are created equal! #1 best selling wireless thermometer?

Updated: Sep 11, 2022

There are plenty of "wireless" options on the market but not all wireless options function the same way.

If you happened to stumble across the accessories page you might have noticed the picture of the junk drawer with a few thermometers. They are all bluetooth style but only one features an app.

Check out the Sonos vs. Heos article for bluetooth vs wifi.

I bought the Famili brand because I read a blog about how cheap and awesome it was. It did serve a purpose for about a year before it started to fail. "Buy cheap, buy twice". This is a wireless option in that it's bluetooth, however it has a separate device. The blogger didn't mention that fact and I didn't do my due diligence.

The second unit receives the signal allowing you to check on the temps from it. However you are tethered to the device if you need to check temps. Not as useful as an app on the phone.

I purchased the gray one when I noticed my Famili failing. It was "highly rated" on Amazon called Tranmil which is no longer available. I forget what I paid and it's not viewable in my purchase history. I'm glad it's unavailable as I don't want someone to make the same mistake and purchase it. It was under $30 if I recall correctly. *edit* I was going back to add links and the Famili one I had purchased is no longer available.

It worked very similar to this set up and functionality by ThermoPro. Which is actually Amazon's #1 Best seller. Which should not be mistaken for the highly regarded Thermoworks brand. In fact if you browse Thermoworks website you will see a disclaimer in regards to fake products. I'm not sure if this is one that they refer to but the name is very similar.

Full disclosure, I applied to be an affiliate partner of Thermoworks. I was denied. 😢 I'll try again another time. All Thermoworks products are highly ranked and rated by many backyard BBQers and professionals alike. The ThermoPen instant read thermometer as well as the Thermoworks Signals is often considered the best.

The Tranmil worked the same way as the Famili does with a second readout unit. That quickly kicked the bucket. I tried fresh batteries with no luck. From the picture of the ThermoPro you can see both units. Both units also require batteries.

The next thing to go on it was the second probe insert. It collapsed into the unit itself. I'll keep it around till it totally fails. I can use it if I'm resting meat in a cooler and have other things on the Kamado. Sometimes I'll fire up both of the smokers the Kamado Joe and the Pit Barrel Cooker. When I'm running both I will need more than one device.

Which leads me to the current thermometer I'm using and it's the InkBird and I love it. When I bought mine it was under $50. It comes with 4 probes and an app. The version I have is bluetooth which means I do have to be in range for the app to work. Sorry no checking the temps on beer runs.

I will say replacement probes are $10. It comes with 4.... so you can spend $40 on replacement probes or spend $52 and get a second unit with 4 probes.

I don't recall anyone really talking about the cost of replacement probes but they will break down over time.

It is an important decision when selecting a thermometer as replacement probes are something that will add to the overall cost expense of the unit. I don't know if you have the same problem as I do but they can be like cell phone charging cords and need to be replaced frequently. Check out the post here for maintenance of the probes.

The Inkbird can also chart the temperature, set alarms, and set meat type for the cook.

The bucket list thermometer is the Inkbird wifi version. They also make a 6 sensor version. Who doesn't need more probes?

One of the best features of the Inkbird? It is rechargeable so no batteries are required and it hold a charge forever.
